BE SIMPLY SMART WITH YOUR SOLAR ENERGY SELECTION FOR YOUR HOME
UK Households are always looking at ways to squash the monthly broadband bills, and for many it’s the cost that’s more of the focus over the speed and connection of the broadband that presents the best broadband deal for them.
To get the best household broadband deals people need to be simply smart with their broadband plan selection, there are many things they need to take into account; it depends on their intended use and number of users.
There are a few terms detailed below which you may like to familiarise yourselves with when looking at taking on or looking to change your current broadband service and/or supplier.
ADSL
ADSL is the most used form of broadband as this form is linked in and supplied via the telephone network. ADSL is normally up to 40 times faster than using the rapidly reducing form of dial-up connection to the Internet.
ADSL operates on what’s called a ‘Contention Ratio’ which is that the broadband service to the exchange is a shared service perhaps with another 20-40 users. This means that if using this form of broadband service and you was on a 20 Meg plan – with 20 users online at the same time would mean that each would only be able to access 1 Meg. The reduction affects the speed and connection and often this the reason for the slow speeds which people incur during peak times during the day.
Cable Modem
Cable broadband is supplied by cable television companies such as Virgin Media.
Cable broadband does not work on a ‘Contention Ratio’ as it works on fibre optics. This means that if you were on a 20 Meg plan, that’s exactly what you would be receiving no matter how many people or neighbours where using the service at the same time.
Satellite
Satellite broadband uses a small antenna receiver dish fitted to the outside of your house to link up with a satellite in geo-stationary orbit at an altitude of approximately 24,000 miles.
